If On a winter's night a traveler | Italo Calvino

If on a winter’s night a traveler,

Independently of what you expected of the author, it’s the book in itself that arouses your curiosity; in fact, on sober reflection, you prefer it this way, confronting something and not quite knowing yet what it is.

The novel begins in a railway station, a locomotive huffs, steam from a piston covers the opening of the chapter, a cloud of smoke hides part of the first paragraph.

The lights of the station and the sentences you are reading seem to have the job of dissolving more than of indicating the things that surface from a veil of darkness and fog.

A novel that talks about trains and stations cannot help conveying this odor of smoke. For a couple of pages now you have been reading on, and this would the time to tell you clearly whether this station where I got off is a station of the past or a station of today; instead the sentences continue to move in vagueness, grayness, in a kind of no man’s land of experience reduced to the lowest common denominator. Watch out: it is surely a method of involving you gradually, capturing you in a story before you realize it- a trap.

The more I seek to return to the zero moment from which I set out, the further I move away from it.

All places communicate instanlty with all other places, a sense of isolation is felt only during the trip between one place and the other, that is, when you are in no place.

It is there very distance that keeps them together.

The problem is that everybody wants problem to be debated in novel. Citing this as a problem Calvino is contradicting, parodying or laughing?

There are days when everything I see seems to me charged with meaning : messages it would be difficult for me to communicate to others, define, translate into words, but which for this very reason appear to me decisive.

The search for the anchor in which I am engaged seems to indicate to me an avenue of escape, perhaps of metamorphosis, a resurrection. With a shudder I dismiss the thought that the prison is my mortal body and the escape that awaits me the separation of the soul, the beginning of a life beyond this earth.

Reading is always this : there is a thing that is there, a thing made of writing, a solid, material object, which cannot be changed, and through this thing we measure ourselves against something else that is not present, something else that belongs to the immaterial, invisible world, because it can only be thought, imagined, or because it was once and is no longer, past, lost, unattainable, in the land of the dead…

Yet true authors remain those who for him were only a name on the jacket, a word that was part of the title, authors who had the same reality as their characters, as the places mentioned in the books, who existed and didn’t exist at the same time, like those characters and those countries.

All I did was to accumulate past after past behind me, multiplying the pasts, and if one life was too dense and ramified and embroiled for me to bear it always with me, imagine so many lives, each with it’s own past and the pasts of the other lives that continue to become entangled with the others.

I am producing too many stories at once because what I want is for you to feel, around the story, a saturation of other stories that I could tell and maybe will tell or who knows may already have told on some other occasion, a space full of stories that perhaps is simply my lifetime, where you can move in all directions, as in space, always finding stories that cannot be told until other stories are told first and so setting out from any moment or place, you encounter always the same density of material to be told.

But how to establish the exact moment in which a story begins? Everything has already begun before, the first line of the first page of every novel refers to something that has already happened outside of the book. Or else the real story is the one that begins ten or a hundred pages further on, and everything that precedes it is only a prologue.

The book should be the written counterpart of the unwritten world; it’s subject should be what does not exist and cannot exist except when written but whose absence is obscurely felt by that which exists in it’s own incompleteness.

As long as I know there exists in the world a woman who loves reading for reading’s sake, I can convince myself that the world continues.

The book I am looking for is the one that gives the sense of the world after the end of the world, the sense that the world is the end of everything that there is in the world, that the only thing there is in the world is the end of the world.

Reading is an operation without an object, or its true object is itself. The book is an accessory aid or even a pretext.

Do you believe that every story must have a beginning and an end? The ultimate meaning to which all stories refer has two faces : the continuity of life, the inevitability of death.
